Børge Birch´s close friend tells:

Børge received a visit in 1951 from Soulages and the conversation, among many other things, embarked upon the subject of the numerous elegant timberwork-houses on Bornholm, where the timbered parts consist of horizontal and vertical beams painted black. Soulages had to see them, but neither Børge nor Soulages had money for travelling. Børge then got the idea to suggest that Soulages paint 5 or 6 pictures, size 16 x 24 inches. Canvas and colours were bought immediately from the paint dealer around the corner on Dronningens Tværgade.Soulages installed himself in the attic above Børge's Art Shop on Bredgade and began to mix colours and to paint.

The pictures were priced at 500 crowns a piece and I bought one. The others were sold as well - and the trip to Bornholm could be made.
