Stories from the reopening of Galerie Birch in 1994

Owner of the gallery since 1994, Anette Birch tells.

The reopening of Galerie Birch has been in the making for a long time.

It is taking place as a result of careful and mature considerations, however, it goes without saying, the undersigned was a bit jittery about daring to tread in my father's footsteps, his haveing been the well - reputed, widely known art dealer and great personality which he was.

The Galerie is pleased to present a small portion of that magnificent world which for forty-seven years belonged to Børge Birch.

Works of art speak their own distinctive and powerful language, as do these. Today, many of you will give a nod of recognition upon looking over and inspecting them once again. But, as so often is the case, pictures are exhibited and obtained or sold at a point in time whereat none or very few had any appreciation of abstract art.

The art collectors who display their works of art in this booklet are persons who one has to admire for their foresight and courage.

The encountering of art, not unlike life itself, is frequently fortuitous, coincidential. It is therefore that I have chosen to allow each of the collectors individually to recount a little anecdote as to how they and Børge Birch came across each other upon first meeting.

It is with the greatest of pleasure, joy, and delight that I am privileged to bid you a most heartly and cordial welcome to our history.

Anette Birch

Owner of gallery, Anette Birch

Galerie Birch is the oldest Danish gallery for modern art founded in 1946 by Mr. Børge Birch, the father of Anette Birch who owns the gallery today. Børge Birch became a leading European art dealer and was in particular recognized for his work with the COBRA movement with artists such as Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel and Corneille. In the 1950’s the gallery also had several one man shows by major French and international artists such as Georges Braque, Poliakoff, Pablo Picasso, Leger, Laurens, Nolde and Pierre Soulages already in 1951.
