Biography
Reinhoud d'Haese was born in Grammont, Belgium. From 1960 he used his first name only.
As a sculptor making sensitive partly surrealistic sculptures of cobber he was introduced to the COBRA-movement by his friend Pierre Alechinsky. He was one of the first to move into one of two COBRA houses in Brussels. Exhibited at several COBRA exhibitions among these, the last one in Liège 1951.
Only in 1958, a long time after the movement had fallen apart, Reinhoud got on to doing his own thing. Since that time he has made works of art in different kinds of metal, but also, at a small scale, a population of humorous and mysterious fairytale beings in bread which completely harmonise with the COBRA language. These strange beings, which sometimes look a bit like insects but also like birds, are often presented in groups and most of the time they execute human activities. Reinhoud worked with copper, lead and pewter.
Børge Birch was introduced to Reinhoud before COBRA was formed, when he was visiting Pierre Alechinsky at his country place. Reinhoud and Birch became friends and Reinhoud made some small sculptures of bread to Børge Birch. Birch was fascinated and suggested to cover them with silver and the figures became a huge success for Reinhoud. He and Birch made much future collaborations and beside several group shows he had also many solo exhibitions in Galerie Birch, the first in 1961 followed by others in 65-69-73-77-85-86.
