PIERRE SOULAGES

Soulages from 1950

Without title

Born 1919 in Rodez, France.

Painter, sculptor

Education

Soulages goes to Paris to prepare the professorship of drawing and the entrance examination at The École Nationale Supérieure of the art schools. During this short stay in Paris he attends the museum of Louvre, he sees exposures of Cézanne and Picasso which are for him revelations.

Biography

As a very young person he is attracted by the Romanesque art and prehistory but it becomes 1946 before he can devote all his time to painting. He finds a workshop and settles in Paris.

His artworks of fabrics, where the black dominates are abstract and dark are quickly a success, and he is noticed throughout Europe, USA and the Far East. In 1948, he takes part in exposures in Paris and in Europe, in particular in “Französische abstrakte malerei”, in several German museums followed by exposures in New York, London, Sao-Paulo and Copenhagen from 1949 to 1952.

He makes his first etchings with the Lacourière workshop and later his first paintings - monopigmentaires - founded on the reflection of the light by surface qualities of the black. This pictorial light being born from the difference between two darkness’s carries in it a great capacity of emotion and great possibilities of development. Other works appeared where rate/rhythm, space and light are born from the contacts violent one of the black and the white on the whole surface of the fabric; it is a very other pictorial light.

Pierre Soulages artworks are permanently exhibited in over 150 museums worldwide.
