Born 1936 in Hamburg, Germany
In the years 1956-1960 Jan Voss studies at the Academy of art in Munich.
In 1966/67, he is a guest teacher at the Academy of Art in Hamburg. Five years later, some of Voss´ artworks are presented in “Kunsthalle”, Kiel and the same year the artist's highly mentioned solo exhibition at Art Cologne takes place.
From 1987-1992 he teaches as a professor at “École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts” in Paris.
The common theme in his paintings can be characterized as “the organized”. And yet we also find complex situations of chaos and constant movement. Voss experiments with diverse techniques and materials, producing paintings with powerful intense colours and others with more calm effects almost resembling drawings. In the latter part of his oeuvre, we find the paper-relief, consisting of collages made from watercoloured fragments of paper, torn to pieces. Whether on canvas, wood, paper relief or watercolour, the common feature is the buildup of different colors and shapes, which interact and merge with one another. Voss uses this form of language first and foremost in his two-dimensional paintings. In the 1980's he uses the same technique in his three-dimensional artwork. From this period onwards, he makes use of a variety of techniques: creasing, folding, tearing, sawing and glueing - Voss seeks the constant change. Despite new picturesque materials, he is still not to be confused with anybody else.
The artist Jan Voss, who has lived and worked in Paris since 1960, is considered one of the most outstanding contemporary artistic personalities. His artwork is exhibited in leading galleries and represented in permanent collections in museums worldwide.
Galerie Birch has exhibited Jan Voss in solo shows 1965-69-70-76-81-2008 as well as numerous mixed exhibitions.
