Biography
One of the post-war absolutely largest internationally Danish artists which have had great influence on later Danish painters. Asger Jorn was the creating mind behind the magazine “Helhesten” (1941-44), which got to be the gathering organ for the “Høst” exhibitions abstract-expressionistic painters, and became a model for the later CoBrA-magazine. Jorn created together with Belgian and Dutch artists, the CoBrA-movement which got established in 1948. Mostly Jorn is best known for his oil paintings, but he also created an uncharted amount of ceramics, various prints, watercolours, drawings, gouaches and collages. In addition to this, Jorn wrote articles and art-theoretic books.
His political view came to term in the big painting "Stalingrad" (1957-60 and 1967-72), now at the Silkeborg Art Museum. His radicalism came to expression when he refused public attention, he declined to accept the “Eckersbergs Medaillen”, the Guggenheim Award and to exhibit with Denmark's detachment by the Biennale in Venice.
Jorn travelled much and notably in Albisola and Cuba he found great inspiration which resulted in forceful expressions on the canvas.
Børge Birch founded very early, a deep friendship with Asger Jorn and already in the mid-thirties did Birch sell Jorns artworks. Asger Jorn has exhibited many times in Galerie Birch, plenty of group-exhibitions and solo-exhibitions in the years 1948-50-53-55-61-62-63-64-65-66-67-68-69-72 and 2006-2007.
